A Journey of Beliefs & Vision
Birth of the DPP
Founded in 2005 by His Excellency Late Prof. Bingu wa Mutharika, the DPP was established to restore citizens’ trust in governance and drive national development.

Guiding Beliefs
Rooted in social democracy and Ubuntu, DPP promotes people-centered development, progressive liberalism, and the dignity of every Malawian.

National Unity Pledge
DPP unites all Malawians regardless of tribe, region, or belief—building peace, tolerance, and harmony as the foundation for prosperity.

Transforming Malawi
Our vision is to make Malawi a producing and exporting nation—adding value to agriculture, minerals, and natural wealth for national prosperity.

Prosperity, Justice & Security
DPP is anchored on three core pillars: Prosperity, Justice, and Security—fueled by patriotism, integrity, and hard work.

Maize Cobs & Blue
The four maize cobs represent national food security across all regions. The color blue reflects our unity, peace, and visionary leadership.

DPP Woyeee!
“DPP Woyeee! Malawi Woyeee!!!” – A patriotic cry of pride, unity, and progress, echoing the heartbeat of the Democratic Progressive Party.

Our Foundation
At the heart of DPP's formation and existence are beliefs and values grounded on people-centered development approaches, long term infrastructure developments, people-driven economic stewardship, household food security, and a culture of respect for human rights and human dignity for all.
The political philosophy of the DPP is social democracy or developmental democracy, with elements of Ubuntu and progressive liberalism. The DPP leans toward progressive values while embracing some moderate and pragmatic approaches to governance.
Our Origin
Founded in February 2005 by the then Malawian President, His Excellency Late Prof. Bingu wa Mutharika, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was formed to restore the confidence of the people of Malawi in their government.
"The people wanted a government they can trust, a government that can deliver. They wanted the government that will ensure that the people of Malawi believe in themselves and take full control of their destiny."
The Three Guiding Pillars
Prosperity
Economic growth and development for all Malawians through sound financial management and wealth creation.
Justice
Fair treatment and equality for all citizens through upholding human rights, civil liberties and the rule of law.
Security
Peace, stability and safety for our nation through unity, tolerance and reconciliation.
To achieve these pillars, we uphold:
Our Vision
To see Malawi resume economic growth fast enough to bring about prosperity, to reduce poverty significantly, and to make life better for everyone; to produce enough food for all; to see that Malawi transforms from being a predominantly importing and consuming Malawi to being a predominantly producing and exporting country; and to gradually emerge as an industrial nation capable of transforming our agricultural commodities, other raw materials and minerals, so as to create new wealth for our people.
Our Mission
To instill confidence in the economy and to persuade Malawians to believe in ourselves that we can achieve macroeconomic growth and reduce poverty through sound financial management and fiscal prudence; to create more jobs; to redistribute incomes by promoting significant domestic savings; foreign financing and investment in our agricultural processing, industrial production and manufacturing; and to thereby increase the supply of quality goods and services for the domestic and international markets.
Our Aims
We are committed to building a prosperous Malawi through these fundamental objectives
Economic Empowerment
Fighting poverty through sustainable economic programs and opportunities
Agricultural Development
Developing agriculture and attaining national food security
Wealth Creation
Creating new wealth for all people of Malawi

Our Symbolism

The emblem of the DPP is four (4) maize cobs arranged in a flower pattern. The cobs represent food sufficiency for the people of all four political regions of Malawi: North, Centre, East and South. We prioritize food security as a fundamental aspect of economic development.
Blue Color
The color Blue represents the Party's pillars, values, identity and vision. It symbolizes our commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence and tolerance, trust and integrity, visionary leadership and patriotism.
Our Pledge to Malawi
To provide sound economic and political leadership and to work with all Malawians, including those from other political parties, in the spirit of tolerance, understanding and reconciliation, thereby consolidating peace, harmony, security and stability as the basis for prosperity in Malawi.
